Insulin pump therapy

Our office can work with you to provide information and answer questions about the various insulin pumps available and help choose the pump most suitable for your lifestyle. Once you've received your insulin pump, we can continue to provide assistance from pump initiation to advanced insulin pump management.
What is an Insulin Pump?
An insulin pump is a medical device that is worn externally to deliver insulin for a patient with diabetes mellitus. It can be used for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It infuses rapid acting insulin (Humalog, Novolog, or Apidra) continuously for background coverage, as well as deliver boluses for meals and correction of elevated sugars. Insulin pump therapy allows for intensive diabetes management without having to administer multiple daily injections with an insulin syringe or an insulin pen. Continuous glucose monitoring system

CGMS is approved by the FDA and is available as an outpatient service in our office. Patients are able to wear it for a week, and once returned, blood sugars are downloaded into a chart for the physician and patient to review. You are also able to obtain your own CGMS for use at home.
What is a CGMS?
Continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) is a tool that utilizes a small sensor to measure glucose levels from interstitial fluid for 6 to 7 days. It is inserted underneath the skin, and will measure a person's glucose levels every 5 minutes for the entire time it is worn. Parameters are set to alert a person for a low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or a high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). In addition to a person's blood sugar, it can also inform the patient of whether the blood sugar is trending upward or downward. This allows the patient to actually see the correlation between food and blood sugar. Dexcom Medtronic
